Padstow is one of Britain's best-known food towns and the waters off the north coast land some of its best seafood. You don't have to have lobster, though: Cornish weddings are just as likely to end with a hog roast or a tray of pasties at ten o'clock.
Choosing a style
Seated three-course meals still suit hotels and large marquees. For fields, barns and beach-side parties, sharing platters, long-table feasts, wood-fired pizza, seafood stations and hog roasts are popular and often easier to serve. Whatever the style, ask about the kitchen: an outdoor caterer may need a catering tent, water and power of their own.
Drinking local
Rock is home to Sharp's Brewery, which brews Doom Bar, named after the sandbank at the mouth of the estuary. Camel Valley vineyard, upstream near Bodmin, makes sparkling wine that has won international awards. Cornish ciders, gins and soft drinks are easy to find too. A local drinks list is a simple way to make the day feel like Cornwall.
Bars, corkage and licences
If the venue runs the bar, ask about corkage if you want to bring your own wine. At a marquee or field wedding with a mobile bar, someone needs to be licensed to sell alcohol. That usually means a Temporary Event Notice, which you, the landowner or the bar company applies for through Cornwall Council. Evening food
Guests who travelled a long way, swam at Polzeath or danced for four hours will be hungry by late evening. Pasties, fish finger sandwiches, bacon rolls or cheese boards go down well, and a caterer can serve them with very little kit.

- Have you catered at this venue or field before? What do you need from us on the day (water, power, a kitchen tent)?
- What is included: staff, crockery, linen, clearing up, waste removal?
- How do you handle allergies and dietary needs?
- Can you provide or recommend a licensed bar, and who applies for any licence?
- What is your food hygiene rating, and do you hold public liability insurance?
