The Camel Estuary is one of the most photogenic stretches of the Cornish coast: wide sands at low tide, the dunes around Daymer Bay and Brea Hill, and Padstow's harbour across the water. A photographer who knows it will plan your portraits around the light and the tide, not just the clock.
Plan around the light and the tide
The best light on the estuary is in the last hour or so before sunset, when it comes in low across the water from the west. In midsummer that can mean nine o'clock at night, so many couples step out for twenty minutes between courses or just after the speeches.
Tide matters too. At low tide the estuary turns into acres of firm sand, perfect for wide shots; at high tide the beaches near Rock shrink to a strip. Look up the tide table for your date before you fix the timings, and share it with your photographer.
Wind, weather and a plan B
The north coast catches the Atlantic weather. Veils, hair and confetti all behave differently in a stiff breeze, and a good photographer will find shelter in the lee of the dunes or a harbour wall. Agree an indoor or covered fallback for group shots, and keep a few clear umbrellas handy: a rainy-day portrait on the beach can be the picture everyone remembers.
Booking
Summer Saturdays in Cornwall book up early, often more than a year ahead. If your date is fixed, book the photographer soon after the venue. Midweek and shoulder-season dates (May, June, September) are easier to secure and often cheaper.
Questions to ask
- Have you photographed at this venue or on the Camel Estuary before? Can we see a full gallery, not just highlights?
- How do you back up images on the day, and how long until we receive the gallery?
- Do you carry public liability insurance? Many venues ask to see it.
- What happens if you are ill? Do you have a network of photographers who can step in?
- Are travel and an overnight stay included, or charged on top?
- Is a second photographer included, or an option?
